Lust is Much Like a Modern Day Bait-and-switch Scheme How do I deal with it?

Lust promises pleasures but these pleasures are transient, then come the guilt, misery, pain, shattering of careers and families, and ultimately leads to eternal damnation if not renounced. When you yield to lust, you lose your love for God and you act as though you don’t know Him (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, 1 John 2:5-17). God desires that each one of us will know how to possess our own bodies in sanctification and honor and not in the passion of lust (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5).

Note that anything you give your attention to controls your mind and in turn controls your heart and will control your way of life.

Lust has become unprecedented in this generation due to the advent of internet and the proliferation of electronic media outlets including TV, radio and social media. These media impact our lives through the power of repetition, which creates desires and pathways of lust in our hearts. To overcome lust, you must be selective about the things you see/read, hear, feel, smell and touch - For the things you allow through your senses control your mind.

It is therefore expedient for you as a child of God to “get your soul out of this world” by carefully selecting which information, song lyrics, videos and pictures to give your attention to. In essence, guard your heart because everything you do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23). I recommend that you let the word of the Lord dwell in you richly through reading of the scriptures, prayer, listening to godly tapes and videos, and attending gatherings that will boost your quest to conform to the image of Christ.

Furthermore, be careful about the people you choose as friends and avoid evil company as it will corrupt your good manners (1 Corinthians 15:33). Open up and share your struggles with seasoned and tested men of faith who can pray for you and mentor you.

If you are enslaved to lust and you feel helpless, ask God to create in you a clean heart and to renew a right spirit in you. These come through rebirth via acceptance of Jesus as the Lord of your life and through prayer and deliverance. Rest assured that because everything born of God overcomes the world, sin (lust) will no longer rule over you.
